The quagga was confirmed as being extinct in 1900. The quagga is believed to have diverged from other plains zebras between 120,000 and 290,000 years ago.
Due to these differences, the quagga was initially thought to be a separate species, rather than a subspecies. Its rear was brown and its legs and undersides were white.
